WIKILEAKS – 1,800 Cables relating to Canada released

On the eve of another Canadian federal election, WIKILEAKS (the famed whistle-blowing website) has released 1,800 cables relating to Canada with a promise of 1,000s more soon to follow.

So what do these cables reveal if anything?

The most prevalent information to be gleamed from these cables is something that most Canadians already knew: that Stephen Harper really, really liked former US president George W. Bush and tried his best to implement as many US Republican corporate values/policies into as many Canadian laws as he could (another reason why a minority government is not always a bad thing) but in reality, the cables show that the US State Dept. really wasn’t all that impressed with Mr. Harper…

• US embassy questions legitimacy of Harper budget!
  
  “The Canadian government’s plan to eliminate the nation’s budget deficit and return to pre-recession growth rates by 2015 without cutting spending or raising taxes is leaving some economists scratching their heads. Ottawa observers suggest that the optimistic forecast is an attempt by the Harper government to bolster support for its economic recovery plan in anticipation of a possible autumn election…”

• Harper promised Bush to introduce US style copyright law!

• US, Harper government on how to spin “Oil Sands”
